The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has unveiled the #OneNigeria/UnityFabric, a symbolic representation of national unity. The fabric was designed by Miss Mofiyinfoluwa Bamidele, a 25-year-old graduate of the University of Ibadan, who emerged the winner of the #OneNigeria/UnityFabric Competition.

According to the statement signed on 16th September, 2024, by Busola Kukoyi, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria  .

The unveiling ceremony, held on Monday at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, marked a significant moment for national cohesion. Miss Bamidele received a cash prize of N25 million for her outstanding design, which was selected from 111 entries in the competition organized by the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), chaired by the First Lady.

In her keynote address, Senator Tinubu explained that the concept for a national unity fabric was inspired by a similar initiative she encountered during her visit to Zimbabwe in December 2023, where she participated in the launch of the #WeAreEqual Unifying Campaign under the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD).

“The idea behind the #OneNigeria/UnityFabric is to create a symbol that reflects our cultural diversity and reinforces the message of national unity,” the First Lady stated. “I believe this initiative can help break down tribal barriers and encourage all Nigerians to identify as one nation.”

A panel of judges, including fashion industry icon Princess Zainab Abba Folawiyo and international textile designer Banke Kuku, rigorously evaluated the submissions.

“I am overjoyed to witness the unveiling of this fabric and to celebrate Miss Bamidele’s fantastic design. It is a testament to the creativity and potential of Nigeria’s youth,” Senator Tinubu said. She also expressed gratitude to the judges and the RHI Governing Board for their contributions to the initiative.

The First Lady further revealed that the national unity fabric would be produced locally and worn across the country to commemorate Nigeria’s Independence Day on October 1, 2024. The mass production of the fabric is expected to boost the local textile industry, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
