Workers’ Day: A Call To Action Amidst Economic Hardship | The Legend News

As Nigerian workers celebrate May Day today, labor leaders are sounding the alarm on the crippling effects of rising food prices and fuel scarcity. The Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress are urging the government to take immediate action to address the economic crisis that’s pushing workers to the brink.

With queues at fuel stations snaking around blocks and basic food commodities skyrocketing by up to 40%, workers are struggling to make ends meet. The recent electricity tariff hike has only added insult to injury, with the government increasing prices by a staggering 603%.

Labor leaders are decrying the government’s policies, which they say have exacerbated inflation and poverty. They’re calling for a significant increase in the minimum wage, which has remained stagnant despite the soaring cost of living.

Despite the gloom, labor leaders are finding reasons to celebrate the resilience of Nigerian workers. “It’s a miracle workers are surviving under the present economic reality,” says Sola Adigun, TUC Chairman in Ekiti State.

As workers across the country mark this year’s Workers’ Day, they’re sending a clear message to the government: it’s time to prioritize their welfare and take concrete steps to address the economic hardship that’s threatening their very existence.”
