Widespread condemnation from Organized Private Sector (OPS), political class and directive by President Muhammadu Buhari, that public officers with political ambition to resign have made the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, to withdraw his presidential bid.
Usually authoritative sources within the apex bank have informed TheLegendNews, that the CBN governor, knows that his chances of clinching the All Progressive Congress (APC), presidential ticket is slim.
“The governor knows his chances of winning the party ticket is slim, hence he doesn’t wants to lose on both sides. Now, he has to resign and having about two years to end his tenure mean he will be losing on both sides,” he said without wanting her name mentioned.
Another source, said the president was curious about his presidential ambition because of the neutrality and independence of the bank.
“The president told the governor expressly to resign his appointment with immediate effect if he’s still going ahead with his ambition,” another source told our Correspondent.
However, Emefiele’s final withdrawal came weeks after speculations were rife that he would contest for the seat during the upcoming general elections.
The Governor had met President Buhari Thursday, where he may have informed him of his final decision.
Though he declined comment after the meeting, Emefiele had told State House correspondents to expect an announcement any moment.
“There is no news now, but there will be news. Let them have a heart attack.its good to have a heart attack. I am having a lot of fun”, Emefiele said of his many critics who had called him to resign as the CBN Governor and face his political ambition.
It was recall that former minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has asked Emefiele, to resign with immediate effect.
Ezekwesili statement comes hours after the governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, asked him to resign over his decision to contest the 2023 election.
However, Ezekwesili, in a tweet, on her official Twitter page @obyezeks on Saturday, said the CBN should resign to pursue his ambition.
She said, “The Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria’s central bank must now immediately tender his resignation to stop further destroying whatever little remains of the country’s monetary policy reputation. Mr Emefele should leave immediately- tonight- to pursue his ill-fated political career.”
