A devastating series of accidents occurred along the Maryland axis of Lagos State in the early hours of Sunday, resulting in the loss of three lives and leaving several others injured. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) responded promptly to the scene, where they encountered a multiple-vehicle accident involving a diesel-laden tanker that had experienced brake failure.
According to Nosa Okunbor, head of the Public Affairs Unit of LASEMA, the tanker crashed into several vehicles, resulting in numerous casualties. Upon arrival, the LASEMA team discovered another accident involving a containerized truck that had collided with a MACK truck, leaving the container truck driver with a leg injury.
The accidents involved several vehicles, including two Volkswagen Vanagon commercial buses, one Mitsubishi Space Bus, two mini-buses (Korope), and one Honda car. Emergency responders worked tirelessly to secure the area, implement safety and traffic control measures, and recover the accident trucks and vehicles.
Sadly, three fatalities were reported, with the bodies removed before the LASEMA team arrived. An unspecified number of people were critically injured and taken to various hospitals. The cause of the second accident was attributed to reckless driving and speeding.
LASEMA’s swift response and collaboration with other responders, including the police and Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, helped alleviate the traffic gridlock caused by the incident. The agency’s efforts ensured the temporary closure of the road and bridge, allowing for the safe recovery of vehicles and mitigation of further accidents.
