— “Please and please, it’s not good to have a Federal Emir and a State Emir” – Sani
Former Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial Zone, has shared his thoughts on the ongoing Emirship conflict in Kano Emirate.
In a post on his official X handle on Sunday afternoon, Senator Sani expressed his disapproval of the current situation where there appear to be two Emirs in Kano.
“Please and please, it’s not good to have a Federal Emir and a State Emir,” Senator Sani emphasised, highlighting the discord such a scenario could cause within the region.
The controversy erupted on Friday when the Kano State government dethroned the 15th Emir of Kano, Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, appointing Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II as his replacement.
Despite his dethronement, Emir Aminu Ado Bayero has refused to vacate the palace, maintaining that he remains the rightful Emir of Kano.
This standoff has been further complicated by the Federal Government’s apparent support for the deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, creating a situation where two individuals are laying claim to the Emirship — one backed by the state government, which is the only authority with right to install and manage kingship matters, and the other by the Federal Government, without such constitutional power to get involved.
The dual claim to the throne has sparked significant concern among political figures and citizens alike, with fears that it could lead to unrest and instability in Kano Emirate. Senator Sani’s remarks reflect a broader anxiety about the implications of having divided leadership within such a critical traditional institution.
