The delectable and beautiful Shakirat Modupe Salahudeen was on Saturday, January 20, 2024, installed as the 10th President of Lagos Apex Lions Club District 404-B2 Nigeria.
The ceremony, which took place at the Lagos Country Club on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Road, Ikeja, Lagos was witnessed by many past District Governors.
The current District Governor, Professor Dayo Emmanuel Fagbohun and other past District Governors decorated the new President at the ceremony.
Speaking with Nationalmoment, Lion Shakirat Salahudeen said that she felt extremely excited, honoured and happy knowing full well that leadership mantle has been handed over to her as 10th President, Lagos Apex Lions Club District 404-B2 Nigeria.
“We went through training before the appointment. Secondly, my interaction with people around and love for my community has been very helpful.
“I am going to serve my community with my talent, treasure, resources and my time. With that, I believe i am going to do well,” she said.
Lion Modupe Salahudeen promised to emulate her predecessor, Lion (Deaconess) Funmilayo Sandra Adegbola, who performed excellently and got awarded as the best performing President in 2023.
The new President pledged to pursue global humanitarian service focus areas of the Lion Club which are, Diabetes, Environment, Hunger Relief, Paediatric Cancer and Vision.
She also promised to generate funds to carryout the noble course of the club through family, friends, relatives and associates.
“As you aware, Lions Club is service-oriented for people that give their substance to the needy free of charge without expecting any reward from anyone. I implore whoever is in love with his or her community to join us. This service also grooms leaders,” she said.
Also speaking, the District Governor, Professor Dayo Emmanuel Fagbohun stated that he felt elated with the new president, adding, that before one becomes the President of the club he or she must have gone through tutelage.
“She was 2nd vice president, became the 1st vice president last year and now President. The person must have attended some leadership trainings. This week, we had one, which is ELLI and several of our Lions were there. That kind of training is meant to groom leaders. There are some other trainings because a knowledgeable Lion is better than an ordinary Lion. So, she has undergone several trainings and I know she’s not going to disappoint us.
“The expectation of the District Governor in the next one year is that members must grow because the more members we have the more service that will be delivered to the society.
“Service activities must be carried out every month. This month can be dedicated to feeding the hunger, and next month can be for the environment. It’s expected of her to key into those activities,” he said.
He added that members must also pay their dues, and that if members don’t pay, the club might go on suspension or cancellation.
According to him, “you can see new members that joining the club today. That’s what we call membership growth. Here we talk about the mission of having 1.5 million members in about two or three years time. All the Lion members should be 1.5 million around the world and if you could get three, four, five members per club it would be okay. There are over 700 clubs all over the world. As at now, the number of Lion clubs members is about 1.3 million in the world. So, we just want about 200,000 members to attain that figure.”
Also sharing her opinion about parenting, the guest speaker, a former District Governor, Dr. Christine Adebajo, who spoke on ‘ Error of Parenting’ highlighted some of the mistakes made in bringing up a child.
According to him, some parents believe that a child would just grow into adulthood without taking necessary and good care of the child.
Adebajo said that some parents do not care about the well being of their children, adding that this happens where both parents work and go home late in the evening, and that this type of parents don’t have time for their children.
She recommended authorisation parenting as the best.
This, she said, is a situation where everybody in the family is brought to the same page to discuss issues and everybody is part of decision making.
She described what is witnessed in Nigeria today as permissive type, whereby parents see nothing wrong in whatever their children do.
Dr Adebajo stated further that some parents are afraid to talk to their children even when they dress provocatively, saying that such parents even feel comfortable and compliment such children.
“If you want our society to do well, we must ensure good upbringing from home because this determines our society tomorrow.
“Therefore, we must set limit on when a child can go out and come back home. Parents are expected to be role models to their children.
“Children learn manner of dressing from their parents. So, parents need to communicate mutually with their children and they need to respect the rights of their children. We must not find any fault in our children anyhow but we must show them love,” she said.
Highlight of the event was the decoration of High Chief Leye Babalola from Oyo Empire as Honorary Chartered District.
Speaking with Nationalmoment, Chief Babalola gave glory to God Almighty, saying that he has been serving humanity for long, contributing his quota to the development of human beings, adding that he passed through the palace and the palace passed through me.
“In my family, we are custodians of culture. So, I am highly honoured over what happened today. This would also spur me to do more for humanity and the less privileged in the society.
“May God help me to contribute more to the club and get involved in their activities,” he said.
