Yesterday, a prophet from Mabelreign told the police about three people who had come to him for cleansing and were thought to be murderers.
After a fight over change on Monday night, the three suspects are said to have stabbed a vendor named Tobias Matiyase five times with a knife.
Tinotenda Zemba, who was 20 years old, Kudzanayi Sala, who was 21, and John Cheutare, whose age was not given, were arrested at the shrine after the unnamed prophet told the police about them.
Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, a spokesman for the national police, confirmed the event.
It is said that the suspects gave Tobias a US$1 bill and bought four cigarettes and bananas from him.
After Tobias gave them $200 in change, they didn’t understand what he meant. Instead, Zemba, Sala, and Cheutare reportedly asked for $400 in change.
It is also said that Tobias tried to explain to the three that their change was $200, but the three stabbed him five times with a knife and then ran away.
The suspects then went to Mabelreign to get cleansed by a prophet who was not named.
While pretending to do a cleansing ceremony, the prophet called the police, and the three people were caught at the shrine.
Moses Matiyase, Tobias’ uncle, said that his family was shocked and hurt by the death of his nephew.
He said, “I feel like I’m still dreaming. I can’t believe Tobias is gone for good.”
“It hurts, especially when you think about how he died.
“Tobias has been a vendor for more than 15 years, and he was a very quiet person.
“He wasn’t violent, and as a family we are very saddened,” he said.
