Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has directed the state’s Auditor General to conduct a comprehensive audit of the accounts of all 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) for the past three years. This move comes amidst the ongoing political tensions in the state.
While inaugurating the Caretaker Committee Chairmen of the LGAs, Governor Fubara emphasized the need for accountability and transparency in governance. He urged the new officials to prioritize the interests of their people and demonstrate their commitment to good governance.
The Governor stressed that the current political developments are a natural outcome of democratic processes. He noted that the fight against tenure extension is not unique to Rivers State, but a national issue, as it could set a precedent for other states to follow.
Fubara assured that the caretaker committees would not be in place for an excessively long period, as the process for local government elections would commence soon. He warned against violence and urged the officials to settle the salaries and entitlements of the outgoing chairmen peacefully.
This move is seen as a bid to ensure transparency and accountability in the state’s local government administration, amid the ongoing political crisis.
