Nigerians woke up to the sad news of the passing of popular Islamic singer Rukayat Gawat-Oyefeso on Tuesday morning. Known for her unique style of Islamic music and captivating voice, Gawat-Oyefeso had a massive following among Muslim faithful.
The news of her death was first announced by cleric Alfa Aribidesi At-Tawdeeh, founder of At-Tawdeeh Islamic Da’awah in Ilorin, Kwara State, via his social media page.
Gawat-Oyefeso’s brother, Jubril Gawat, also confirmed her passing on social media, posting a Quranic verse that reads: “Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.” (Quran 2:156)
Although the cause of death remains unclear, family and friends have gathered to offer prayers for the late singer according to Islamic rites. Her body has been transported to Ijebu Ayepe, Ogun State, for final burial following the Janaza prayer.
Rukayat Gawat-Oyefeso’s demise has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s Islamic music community, with fans and well-wishers taking to social media to pay tribute to the talented singer.
