Redefining Job Opportunities For Nigerian Youths, NCC Creates Emergency Communication Centres | The Legend News

The Emergency Communications Centres (ECC), being implemented by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) now provide employment placements for many Nigerian youth and professionals, as well as offering informal business activities to the citizens across the Country.

With a total of 27 fully operational ECCs in state capitals, accessible through the toll-free number 112, these centers operate similar to the 911 Emergency Numbers in developed parts of the world. They provide immediate assistance to individuals in distress or witnessing emergencies, such as fire outbreaks, robberies, violent attacks, domestic and road accidents, or health crises. The NCC is currently testing an additional four centers that will begin operations in September 2023, bringing the total to 31. Another four centers are expected to be operational before the end of the year.

To facilitate the dispatch of emergency calls, the NCC has provided technology platforms such as Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems to various response agencies, including the police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC), Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Ambulance Service, and State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMA). These agencies can easily respond to emergency situations reported through the toll-free number 112.

The implementation of the three-digit code, 112, ensures that citizens can easily remember and report emergency situations. Equipped with state-of-the-art communication equipment, ECC agents have undergone training and are capable of utilizing digital radio and Internet-protocol (IP) and geo-location technologies. This enables responders to quickly pinpoint incident locations and deliver efficient rescue services to the public.

The ECCs operate around the clock, with agents working in shifts to ensure services are available 24/7. Response agencies, such as the police, have received additional mobile communication devices, some of which are installed in their offices, to facilitate instant information exchange with ECC call agents. This strengthens command and control over emergency situations throughout the country.

As ECCs continue to play a crucial role in emergency communications, they also fulfill an important socio-economic responsibility by creating job opportunities for Nigerian citizens. Each center employs call agents, facility/IT staff, and administrators, with the Commission ensuring attractive salaries to attract Nigerian youth and other employees. Currently, over 1,200 individuals are employed at the 27 operational ECCs, and more job opportunities will arise as the additional eight centers become fully operational by 2024.

Indigenous Nigerian consultants oversee the management of these centers, providing expertise in both facility and operational management.
