Op-ed: Who Is The Labour Unions Fighting For, Masses OR Self? | The Legend News

The Organised Labour, comprising the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Trade Union Congress (TUC), and other associations of workers in the country, embarked on indefinite strike to press home their demands, which includes; upward review of workers’ minimum wage and reversal of electricity tariffs.

Precisely, the Unions’ demands are basically, N494, 000, as minimum monthly pay for each worker in the country, and that the government the should reverse the electricity tariff to its old N66 par kwh, from N225 par kwh.

To compel the federal government to yield to their demands after several failed negotiating meetings, these groups commenced the indefinite strike on Monday, June 3, 2024.

By this action, Federal and states ministries, companies, hospitals, transport sectors, government schools, courts and others are closed in strict obedience to the Unions’ directives.

The most terrifying of this industrial action is that, the shouting down national grip, which supply electricity to every homes in the country was shut down, thereby sending the whole country into total darkness.

Tens of millions are without power and flights have been disrupted. Operators from TCN were also beaten and injured while they were forcibly removed from control rooms, the company said. Cane-swinging union workers were also seen in photos circulating on social media Monday ordering personnel of the country’s tax agency out of their offices.

By this singular action of shutting down the country’s national grid, we are of opinion that the Labours’ fight is no more for the masses but for themselves.

Reason for this is that millions of homes in the country are more affected by the shutting down of the country’s national grid, because without electricity nothing can be done. People are unable to get water, as majority of the populace depends majorly on boreholes, which are powered by electricity. And the generating plant (generators) which ought to be alternative, there is no fuel to power it, since many fuel stations are not being supplied with fuel.

In as much, we at the SANOP Media & Communications, the publishers of newsdishng, are not against the labour unions fighting for what they considered as their rights, they should also put into consideration the needs of Nigerians in the informal sectors, especially, the peasants, market men and women, self-employees and the unemployed, who have to struggle daily to make ends meet.

Shutting down the national grid, in our opinion, is not in the best interest of the masses they claimed they are fighting for.

The labour unions and their affiliated groups, should find another means of fighting for their rights and stop subjecting the entire country, especially, the masses they claimed to be fighting for, into more hardship.
