Tam Fiofori, a towering figure in Nigerian documentary photography and filmmaking, has left an indelible mark on the world. With a career spanning over six decades, Fiofori’s work was a testament to his boundless energy, creative genius, and commitment to telling the stories that mattered. From his early days in Harlem, New York, where he managed the legendary Sun Ra, to his pioneering work in Nigeria, Fiofori’s legacy is one of innovation, brilliance, and inspiration.

As a founder of the Photographers’ Association of Nigeria (PAN) and a contributor to numerous exhibitions and festivals, Fiofori’s impact on the African documentary landscape is immeasurable. His work continues to inspire new generations of filmmakers and photographers, and his spirit will live on through the countless lives he touched.

While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his life, his art, and his unwavering dedication to storytelling. Rest in peace, “Uncle Tam.” Your legacy will continue to shine bright.

A Brief About Late Tam Fiofori

Tam Fiofori (1942-2024), also known as “Uncle Tam”, was a Nigerian documentary photographer. Notable for his albums chronicling Nigeria’s history, Fiofori was also a filmmaker, writer, critic and media consultant.

Much travelled, Fiofori lived in Harlem, New York, in the 1960s, becoming Sun Ra’s manager, and producing writing that is considered “a founding connection between Ra and the movement that would be known as Afrofuturism”.

He was also founding executive of the Photographers’ Association of Nigeria (PAN), co-founded by another notable Nigerian documentary photographer, Don Barber.

His work has been shown in Africa, Europe and the US, including Odum and Water Masquerades (1974), screened at FESTAC ’77, Tampere Film Festival, 10th FESPACO, Ouagadougou, 1987, Pan African Writers’ Association, Accra, Ghana, and 1979: A Peep into History and Culture.

He is a contributor to the 2018 book African Photographer J. A. Green: Re-imagining the Indigenous and the Colonial (edited by Martha G. Anderson and Lisa Aronson), in a review of which Lindsay Barrett referred to Fiofori as “Nigeria’s iconic photographic genius”

The veteran journalist, artist and photographer passed on June 26, 2024, at aged 82.
