In a significant move to bolster digital connectivity, Nigeria has officially launched the National Broadband Alliance Nigeria (NBAN). This initiative aims to promote collaboration in broadband development and adoption across the nation, as announced by Dr. ’Bosun Tijani, the Honourable Minister for Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
During a press briefing on Thursday, August 15, 2024, Dr. Tijani emphasized that this digital initiative is designed to position Nigeria prominently within the global digital ecosystem. He highlighted the importance of the hashtag #NBAN, which will serve as a rallying point for investments and address the challenges posed by low data consumption and the associated poor returns on investment in the country’s fiber network, ConsumerConnect reports.
“The enhancement of our connectivity infrastructure is vital to our national prosperity,” Dr. Tijani stated. “By improving the quality of broadband supply, we are simultaneously creating avenues to boost demand.”
According to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Nigeria’s broadband connections saw a modest increase of 1.0 percent month-on-month and 2.5 percent year-on-year, reaching 94.4 million as of April 2024.
NCC noted a consistent upward trend in broadband connections since September 2023, with mobile broadband making up over 99 percent of these connections due to its convenience and affordability.
This gradual rise in broadband connections has led to a slight increase in the country’s broadband penetration rate, which rose to 43.5 percent in March 2024, up from 43.1 percent the previous month.
To further bridge the significant broadband penetration gap, the Federal Government is actively implementing the National Broadband Plan (NBP 2020-2025), which aims for a broadband penetration target of 70% and population coverage of 90% by 2025.
In a bid to enhance internet connectivity across the nation, the Nigerian Government has also announced plans to expand the existing infrastructure by adding 90,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables. This ambitious project is expected to increase the country’s fiber optic network from approximately 35,000 km to around 125,000 km, as outlined by Minister Tijani.
