The Federal Government has appealed to Nursing graduates to consider staying in Nigeria to provide vital mental health care services. Speaking at the seventh combined convocation of the School of Psychiatric Nursing in Abeokuta, Dame Francisca Okafor, Director of Nursing, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, encouraged the graduates to prioritize serving their country.
Okafor emphasized the growing need for mental health professionals in Nigeria, citing the increasing burden of mental illness and substance abuse. She urged the graduates to use their expertise to demystify mental illness and provide quality care to Nigerians, especially the youth struggling with drug and substance abuse.
While acknowledging the challenges in the nursing profession, Okafor stressed the importance of sacrifice and patriotism. She encouraged the graduates to work with the government to improve the healthcare system, rather than seeking greener pastures abroad.
The Provost/Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Afis Agboola, and the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), Dr. Faruk Abubakar, also urged the graduates to remain committed to excellent nursing care and make a positive impact in the country.
The convocation ceremony saw 619 graduates receive their diplomas, and the appeal from the Federal Government and healthcare leaders is clear: stay in Nigeria and make a difference in the lives of your fellow citizens.
