The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is set to confront the challenges posed by modern technology on the youth during the upcoming 2024 News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Press Week.
This initiative aims to shed light on the impact of technological advancements on young Nigerians and take place from September 23rd to September 27th at the Multi-purpose Media Centre.
Mr Yemi Adeleye, the Assistant Secretary of the Nigerian Union Journalists (NUJ) NAN Lagos Chapel, shared this information in a recent statement. The theme for this year’s press week is “The Role of Journalism in Addressing the Impact, Opportunities, and Challenges of Modern Technology on Youths.”
The week-long event will feature a variety of activities designed to engage participants and promote community spirit. These activities include a Walk for Fitness, Cultural Day celebrations, a Public Lecture, and a visit to an orphanage and an old home.
Adeleye emphasized the importance of journalism in society, describing it as a cornerstone of democracy and a catalyst for human development. He noted that the NUJ NAN Chapel recognizes the media’s significant role in addressing societal issues and shaping public discourse.
“This week is strategically important as it focuses on pressing global issues related to technology,” Adeleye stated. He pointed out that the world is rapidly evolving, with innovative technological trends reshaping our daily lives. He underscored the necessity of examining both the benefits and drawbacks of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) and their effects on, particularly on the youth.
The assistant secretary reaffirmed the union’s commitment to fostering a vibrant and independent press that champions developmental journalism, standing firmly against fake news and sensationalism. “We acknowledge the challenges faced by journalists today, from censorship to disinformation. We stand in solidarity with journalists who courageously pursue the truth for the development of our country,” he said.
Adeleye also highlighted the importance of promoting developmental journalism, asserting that access to accurate information is crucial for an informed citizenry and a healthy democracy.
The event will feature notable speakers, including Dr. Segun Musa, the Chairman of the Occasion and Chief Consultant at Global Transport Policy, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer for Lagos State, and Malam Ali Mohammed Ali, Chief Host and Managing Director of NAN, among others.
As the NAN Media Week approaches, the NCC and NUJ are poised to engage in meaningful discussions that will address the intersection of technology and youth, fostering a deeper understanding of the role of journalism in navigating these challenges.
