The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has indicated in a recent report that Globacom gained 2,103,721 million new customers in July, thus leading the growth chart by 83 percent in the nation’s telecommunications industry.

This, according to NCC website report, brought Globacom’s subscriber base to 58,330,200 in July from 56,226,479 in June. This shows that 83% of the total number of 2,523,276 new phone users recorded in Nigeria in the month of July chose Glo.

Coming a distant second in the report is MTN which gained 392,440 new subscriptions, while Airtel came third with 90,955 new customers. 9mobile, however, suffered a loss of 63,840 subscribers to reduce its subscriber base to 12,595,516 from its erstwhile June figure of 12,659,356.

Globacom’s remarkable performance in the industry is believed to be a result of the network’s continuous upgrade and extension of 4G data coverage to more cities across Nigeria. The 19-year-old company also offers subscribers innovative products with unique value.

The total number of subscriptions to telecommunication services across the mobile networks of MTN, Glo, Airtel, and 9mobile came to 208.6 million during the period under review from 206 million in June. Nigeria’s teledensity, which measures the number of active telephone connections per 100 inhabitants living within an area, also grew from 108.15 percent in June to 109.47 percent within the same period.

The telecommunications services providers jointly gained a total of 13.5 million new subscribers, with the number of phone users in the country growing from 195,128,265 at the end of December 2021, to 208,604,996 at the end of July 2022. This development, industry watchers say, is a positive departure from last year when the MNOs collectively lost about 20 million subscribers owing to the ban on new SIM registration.
