The parents of late 3-year-old David Chigozie who died in a Lagos Hospital after he was admitted for treatment of cough and catarrh on September 23rd 2022 have narrated how the unfortunate incident happened.
At the hospital, Mr. Nwogu said he was asked certain questions concerning his son. After answering the questions, his son was admitted and placed on oxygen to aid his breathing. The Doctor prescribed some drugs which he quickly went to buy at a pharmacy.
Upon getting to the hospital with the drugs, he said a nurse told him to return to the pharmacy and get an additional bottle of a certain drug. According to him, the nurse said his son required 1.5kg and not 1.2kg as prescribed by the Doctor.
He went to get the additional bottle and then handed it over to the nurse. When the nurse was administering the second shot of the injection, Mr. Nwogu said his child screamed and started vomiting everything he had eaten.
“After mixing everything, she put it in two syringes. She gave the first shot around 8:00 on Friday evening. Before she could finish the second shot, my son shouted, ‘Daddy, my tummy!’ with a lot of energy like he wanted to fly. I grabbed him. He just threw up everything he ate.”
“I now asked the nurse, ‘why did this drug react this way to my son? Is this drug okay or is it too much for him?’ She told me that it is an anti-biotics and it reacts differently to different people. I now said this one that he vomited even what he ate since morning, it is too much. I tried to inquire, made my own little observations into the matter but the lady did not give a second thought to my question.” –explained Mr. Nwogu.
He noted that his son slept with an empty stomach that night. The following morning, the nurse came to give him another shot of the injection. He then told the nurse that his son hasn’t taken anything since the previous day and he would like to quickly prepare food for him to eat. His son cuts in and told him he wanted golden morn.
The nurse however objected and insisted on injecting him before he eats. According to him, his son gave up the ghost while the nurse was injecting him.
The mother of the deceased added that Policemen came in to arrest them (the parents) while they were mourning their son. However, the police eventually left after one of the matrons in the hospital spoke to them.
