Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan has been pretty open in admitting he’s finding the Victor Osimhen transfer saga “crazy” as the Napoli striker is set to join Galatasaray on loan despite being targeted by Chelsea during the summer.
Osimhen is one of the top strikers in Europe on his day and was a man in demand in the last few months, with big names like Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain linked with him, as well as super-rich Saudi Pro League club Al Ahli.
So for a player of his quality to now be joining Galatasaray is indeed pretty “crazy”, as Gundogan posted on Instagram in response to Fabrizio Romano’s update last night…
This really does look like one of the most surprising transfers of recent times, as Osimhen has been left with little choice but to accept a move to Turkey after his relationship with Napoli broke down.
The transfer window is now closed for Premier League clubs and a number of other major European leagues, so that limited the Nigeria international’s options, leading him to join a club no one would have expected him to join earlier in the summer, or even just a few days ago for that matter.
Even Gundogan couldn’t hide his surprise, and one imagines there’ll be a few people at Chelsea wondering how they missed out on this deal.
If Galatasaray can afford Osimhen’s wages, then surely the Blues should have been able to come up with the money for a top centre-forward who would surely have majorly improved Enzo Maresca’s squad.
Gundogan is probably also a bit relieved that his Man City side won’t be coming up against as dangerous a striker as Osimhen in the season ahead, as his presence at Stamford Bridge would surely have made CFC a much more frightening prospect overall.
