Loverboy, Adeola Agbonrin has been sentenced to 21 years in prison by Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo of a Lagos High Court, Ikeja for manslaughter.
Agbonrin pleaded guilty to the one-count charge brought against him by the state government and was subsequently sentenced to 21 years in prison.
Initially charged with the murder of Farinmade, Agbonrin applied for a plea bargain agreement.
He was first arraigned on January 31, 2013, before the same court and later re-arraigned on information contained in a charge marked no ID/99C/15, dated July 3, 2024, wherein he was alleged of the manslaughter of his lover, Matha Farinmade.
According to the prosecution team led by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Dr Babajide Martins, Agbonrin committed the offence on January 7, 2012, at No. 32 Majolate Street, Ilupeju, Lagos.
The judge found Agbonrin guilty as pleaded and sentenced him to 21 years in prison.
Before the sentence, the prosecution counsel, Dr. Martins, informed the court of the plea bargain agreement between the parties, stating that both parties agreed that the defendant would serve a term of 21 years from the date of remand.
The court noted that the defendant had been in custody for 12 years and 4 months since remand on February 9, 2012.
Justice Lawal-Akapo confirmed that the defendant willingly approached the prosecution himself to enter into the plea bargain agreement and was not forced.
Justice Lawal-Akapo stated, “I am satisfied that the defendant understands the charge and the facts presented. I am also satisfied that he entered into the plea bargain agreement freely without being influenced. I therefore accept his plea of guilty.
You, Adeola Agbonrin, are hereby sentenced to twenty-one (21) years imprisonment commencing from 9th February 2012.”
