How Nigeria Secures $3.5m Seed Fund For Artificial Intelligence Development – Minister | The Legend News

The Federal Government of Nigeria has successfully secured a $3.5 million seed fund for the advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) strategy in the country, announced by the Minister of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani.

Speaking at the conclusion of a four-day international workshop on National Artificial Intelligence and Strategy for Nigeria in Abuja, Minister Tijani revealed that the seed fund was contributed by various interested partners to support Nigeria’s initiatives in AI systems and their implementation.

The Minister expressed gratitude to both foreign and local partners, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UNESCO, Meta, Google, Microsoft, Luminate, Lagos Business School, Data Science Nigeria, NITDA, and other agencies under his Ministry’s supervision, for their generous contributions. The fund consists of $1.5 million in direct funding and an additional $2 million invested in the pilot program by 21st Century Technologies.

Minister Tijani emphasized the importance of collaboration between local and foreign partners in achieving Nigeria’s AI strategy goals, stating that with a collective pool of resources, the country can overcome any challenges in this field.

He highlighted the necessity for Nigeria to prepare its citizens for the future impact of AI, emphasizing that the technology will play a significant role in the country, as it will in other nations like Kenya and America.

Furthermore, Minister Tijani advocated for the establishment of an African Council for Artificial Intelligence to ensure uniform regulations and market prospects for AI deployment across the continent. He also announced the AI Collective for Growth initiative, led by NITDA and managed by Lagos Business School, which will receive funding from partners for the next three years.

In conclusion, Minister Tijani expressed optimism about Nigeria’s ability to lead in AI development, citing the government’s commitment to investing in infrastructure and supporting innovative solutions. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and resource allocation in overcoming challenges and maximizing the potential of AI in Nigeria.
