Gabon’s coup leader, General Brice Oligui Nguema, who led a shocking military take over of power in Gabon last week will today be sworn in as President of Gabon on “transitional” capacity.
His swearing in is widely celebrated by the country’s citizens since he over the government. Notably, the new President’s tenure was not specified.
His welcomed act of overthrowing the country’s 55-year Bongo family government amid reported electoral defeat by the opposition party of ex-President Ali Bongo put smiles on the faces of the citizens.
Nguema, before taking over power was the head of the country’s Republican Guard. He led officers in a military coup on last Wednesday against ex-President Ali Bongo Ondimba, scion of a family that had ruled for five decades and half.
The Coup leaders in Gabon jointly declared Nguema, a cousin of the former President and the republican guard chief, as the country’s new leader after deposing incumbent President Ali Bongo Ondimba for alleged betrayal and massive embezzlement. The coup leaders said in an announcement on Gabon’s state TV that Gen. Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema,
President has been “unanimously” designated as President of a transitional committee to lead the country.
“The President of the transition insists on the need to maintain calm and serenity in our beautiful country … At the dawn of a new era, we will guarantee the peace, stability, and dignity of our beloved Gabon,” Lt. Col. Ulrich Manfoumbi said on state TV Wednesday.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that the military junta is enjoying massive support from a majority of the population. Gabon, a former French colony is a member of OPEC, but its oil wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few — and nearly 40% of Gabonese aged 15 to 24 were out of work in 2020, according to the World Bank. Its oil export revenue was $6 billion in 2022, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

According to BBC, Pan African TV and AFFP Media, After deposing Gabonese President Ali Bongo, Gen Brice Oligui Nguema was carried through the streets by his triumphant troops, who chanted “Oligui, président! Oligui, président!”.
