The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a significant increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, raising it from N33,000 to N77,000, effective July, 2024.
This development aligns with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, which was signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on July 29, 2024 .
According to a statement released by the NYSC’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the approval was contained in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25th, 2024, and signed by its Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta .
The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, had previously advocated for a robust welfare package for corps members during a visit to the Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission .
Ahmed expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the timely gesture, stating that it would bring much-needed succor to corps members, boost their morale, and motivate them to serve the nation more effectively .
This increase marks a substantial improvement in the welfare of NYSC members, who had been receiving a monthly allowance of N33,000 since 2019 . The new allowance is expected to take effect from July, 2024, providing financial relief to thousands of youth corps members across the country.
