Federal Government Hosts Workshop On National Artificial Intelligence Strategy | The Legend News

In a bid to advance the goals of the current administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on accelerating diversification through industrialization, digitization, creative arts, manufacturing, and innovation, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy (FMCIDE) recently organized a workshop. The workshop aimed to collaboratively create a National Artificial Intelligence Strategy using a Human-Centered Design (HCD) approach, with a focus on addressing the needs of Nigeria and the global community.

The four-day workshop, themed “Developing the High-Level Strategy and Implementation Plan for a National AI Strategy in Nigeria,” brought together key stakeholders from the private sector, public sector, and global experts. Participants engaged in discussions on the transformative potential of AI in reshaping societies worldwide.

During his opening remarks, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, the Minister of FMCIDE, emphasized the collective responsibility of harnessing AI for the betterment of humanity. He urged participants to envision a future where connectivity and innovation drive national and global development, highlighting the significant impact of digital technology on human interactions and societal norms.

Dr. Tijani further stressed the importance of inclusive dialogue and cooperation in shaping a future where AI serves the common good. He encouraged participants to embrace diverse perspectives and strive for a vision of AI that transcends national boundaries, emphasizing the need for global leadership in AI development.

Engr. Faruk Yusuf Yabo, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, highlighted AI’s potential to transform various sectors of Nigeria’s economy, from healthcare and agriculture to government operations and education. He underscored the importance of developing a practical and culturally sensitive strategy that aligns with Nigeria’s values and specific needs.

Mallam Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), emphasized the role of AI as a catalyst for societal change. He emphasized the workshop’s goal of not only creating a strategy for AI but also developing a strategy with AI, leveraging its transformative power while mitigating potential risks.

The workshop featured breakout sessions where industry and global experts shared insights on contextualizing AI strategy, setting goals for Nigeria’s AI development, and fostering collaboration across sectors. Participants presented strategic initiatives and roadmap developments aimed at shaping a comprehensive AI Strategy document.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Tijani expressed gratitude to all participants and organizations involved in the workshop, highlighting the active engagement and exchange of ideas that took place. He expressed confidence in the development of a robust National AI Strategy that would benefit Nigeria and contribute to global advancements in AI technology.
