The second edition of the West Africa Telecoms Infrastructure Summit and Exhibition (WATISE) recently took place in Lagos, Nigeria, with the theme “Shaping the Future of the Telecoms Infrastructure Industry: Trends and Insights for a Digital Economy.” The event, organized by TechnologyMirror, brought together experts to discuss critical issues affecting the survival of the telecoms industry, using the Nigerian market as a reference point.
In his keynote address, Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), emphasized the importance of telecommunications infrastructure in facilitating seamless connectivity and supporting various services in the digital economy. He highlighted key trends shaping the future of telecom infrastructure, including the rollout of 5G networks, Internet of Things, fiber optic expansion, data localization and security, regulatory frameworks, cybersecurity, and energy efficiency and sustainability.
Maida stressed the need for strategic actions to stay in business, including collaboration, innovative financing models, investment in human capital, focus on sustainability, integration with AI and machine learning, and developing smart infrastructure. He also emphasized the importance of investing in rural telecom infrastructure and making digital literacy a key component of educational programs.
Other speakers, including Mr. Chidi Ajuzie, CEO of WTES Projects Limited, and Tinuade Oguntuyi, Head of Network and Solutions at Information and Communications Services Limited (ICSL), discussed the need to close connectivity gaps, enhance rural connectivity, and support network service providers to reach more rural areas.
The event aimed to shape the future of the telecoms infrastructure industry and promote a reliable telecoms infrastructure for the region.
