The Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC),Dr Aminu Maida delivered a thought-provoking address at the 2-day annual workshop for judges on legal issues in telecommunications.
The event Organised by the NCC, workshop held at the Sheraton Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, brought together esteemed members of the judiciary and industry experts to discuss critical legal issues affecting the telecommunications sector
Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), called upon the judiciary to actively engage in the ongoing digital revolution that is transforming societies worldwide.
He explained that the critical role of the judiciary in this rapidly changing landscape, stating, “As we witness the digital realm evolve at an extraordinary rate, the judiciary must not remain a passive observer. It is essential that it becomes a proactive force in ensuring that technology is harnessed for the benefit of all.”
His remarks undersored the importance of integrating technological advancements into judicial processes, highlighting that the judiciary is a cornerstone in creating a future where technology enhances human. Dr. Maida’s call to action resonates the need for legal frameworks that adapt to the digital age, ensuring justice and equity in a world increasingly influenced by technology.
According to the EVC of NCC, Dr Maida further explained that “the ongoing Judges workshop will serve as a platform for the Commission to share insights into the workings of the Critical National Information Infrastructure Presidential Order, its significance, and the crucial role of the judiciary in bringing the Order’s provisions to life”, the he said.
Justice Kekere-Ekun noted the judiciary’s evolving role in tech-driven cases, like cybersecurity and online banking, which often require judicial intervention. She underscored the judiciary’s commitment to advancing Nigeria’s digital economy by ensuring transparent, timely justice in tech-related disputes. Both leaders recognized the critical intersection of law and technology, with Dr. Maida calling the judiciary a “pillar” in upholding laws that foster trust and protect rights in the digital era.
This workshop, supported by the National Judicial Institute, equips judges to address digital economy challenges and adapt legal principles to evolving tech issues. It aims to deepen collaboration between NCC and Nigeria’s judiciary, setting the stage for impactful contributions to digital transformation across sectors.
