The defendant, Olawuyi DavidOlaniyi, After His Arraignment
A Lagos Federal High Court, today, remanded a 24 year-old man, Olawuyi David Olaniyi, at the Ikoyi-Lagos facility of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS), over alleged accomodation fraud of N94 million.
Justice Yelim Bogoro who presided over the court ordered the remand of the alleged fraudster, after he pleaded not guilty to a six count-charge of conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence and unlawful conversion of funds, made against him by the officers of Force Criminal Investigation Department (ForceCID) Annex, Alagbon-Ikoyi Lagos.
The defendant, according to the prosecutor, Mr. Henry Obiazi, alleged committed the offences alongside his father, Olawuyi Olayinka Michael, who is now at large.
Obiaze told the court that the defendant and his father, succeeded in defrauding their victims, with falsely claiming to them that they a 4 bedroom semi-detached duplex, situate at Ikota Estate, Lekki area of Lagos, to sell.
The prosecutor further told the court that the defendant fraudulently obtained the sum of $51, 000, 00, USD, equivalent of N43 million from one of the fraud victims, while also collected another N51 million, from another victim, with the false pretence of selling to them the same property.
He told the court that the offences committed by the defendant contravened section 8 (1) and 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related offences Act, 2006. And sections 18(3) of the money Laundering (prevention and prohibition) Act, 2022.
The defendant denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to the charge.
With the defendant’s plea of not guilty, the prosecutor asked court for a trial date, while also asked that the defendant be remanded in the NCoS’ custody till the determination of the charge.
However, the defendant through his lawyer, pleaded with the court for a short date, to enable him file his bail application.
Justice Bogoro, after listening to the parties’ submissions, ordered that the defendant be remanded in the NCoS’ custody, while adjourned the matter till December 5, for hearing of the bail application.
