The Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) on Thursday, ejected residents of 20, Babatunde Jose, Victoria Island, Lagos, in compliance with an order of a Lagos Federal High Court.
AMCON executed the judgment over alleged unpaid debt owed a bank, First City Monument Bank (FCMB) by late Olujimi Jolaoso.
Parts of the residents’ properties ejected by AMCON
The debt was originally owed by the bank, but AMCON became his creditor after buying over the alleged debt from FCMB.
However, AMCON officials’ in taking over the property was met with resistance by the residents, but a bloodbath was averted following the professionalism and maturity displayed by lawyers, policemen and court officials at the scene of event.
The residents’ opposition to the execution of the order, was sequel to a confusion caused by two conflicting orders of the court, issues by two judges of the same jurisdiction on the same property.
One of the orders restrained AMCON from the taking over the property, while the another order gave nod to AMCON to take over the same property.
The controversy about the debt has been the subject of a lingering litigation at the Lagos Federal High Court, since 2021, with three judges of the court sitting on the matter.
