The Lagos State Government has announced that the death toll from the recent cholera outbreak has risen to 29, with multiple cases reported across various local government areas. In response, the government has issued a warning to citizens to avoid crowded gatherings and take necessary precautions to prevent further spread of the disease.
According to the government, 350 suspected cases of cholera have been reported in 29 wards across multiple LGAs, with 17 confirmed cases and 15 fatalities attributed to severe dehydration caused by delayed presentation. The affected areas include Lagos Island, Kosofe, Eti-Osa, Lagos Mainland, Ojo, Ikorodu, Shomolu, Surulere, Apapa, Mushin, Ifako Ijaiye, Alimosho, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Oshodi-Isolo, Ikeja, Ibeju Lekki, Badagry, and Amuwo-Odofin.
The government has activated its public health emergency operations center (PHEOC) at Mainland Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, to address the increasing number of severe gastroenteritis cases across multiple LGAs. Laboratory investigation and test results have confirmed cholera subtype O-1, which is associated with more severe disease.
To control the outbreak, the government is distributing oral rehydration solutions (ORS) and conducting public health education campaigns. Citizens are advised to drink safe water, cook food thoroughly, maintain personal hygiene, wash hands regularly, use sanitizers, and avoid overcrowded places. Symptoms like watery diarrhea or vomiting should be reported immediately to save lives and prevent transmission.
The government has reassured citizens that treatment for suspected cholera is provided free of charge at all government facilities as part of the government’s standard public health response.
