The defender failed to notice Lautaro Martinez behind him as he sent the ball back to Ederson, allowing the Argentine to enter the box unattended. To the English champions’ benefit, Ederson swiftly left his line to halt the attempt.

Less than ten minutes later, Rodri made them pay when he connected with Bernardo Silva’s blocked cross and curled the ball past two defenders and into the bottom corner of the net.

Given that Federico Dimarco’s header barely two minutes after the goal hit the top of the crossbar, Manchester City were relatively fortunate that their advantage held till the final whistle.
