At the Annual Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum on Emerging Technologies held in Lagos on September 19th, 2024, the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, was represented by Engr. Abraham Oshadami, the Executive Commissioner for Technical Services,NCC, delivered a significant address.

In his speech, Dr. Maida welcomed attendees to this landmark event, marking Nigeria’s entry into the group of nations leveraging the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi-6 applications. He expressed his enthusiasm for this initiative, noting that since the appointment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2023, the NCC has been committed to repositioning itself to harness opportunities through strategic focus areas that recognize the diverse perspectives and expectations of all stakeholders, including licensees, industry operators, consumers, and the government.

To achieve its strategic goals, NCC has identified key factors such as people, collaboration, data, compliance, and digitalization. Dr. Maida highlighted that the Commission’s actions are aligned with the Federal Government’s Strategic Blueprint, which emphasizes knowledge, infrastructure, innovation, entrepreneurship, capital, and trade, all aimed at improving telecommunication service delivery in Nigeria.

Emphasizing the importance of collaboration, Dr. Maida reiterated the NCC’s commitment to participatory regulation and industry-wide consultations. He invited stakeholders to provide their insights on the utilization of the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi-6 and International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT).

He noted that the 6GHz band, ranging from 5925 MHz to 7125 MHz, presents a significant opportunity to expand available spectrum, essential for meeting the increasing demand for high-speed internet and advanced applications. With Wi-Fi being a critical component in delivering fixed broadband connectivity to homes, offices, and other environments, the current 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands are becoming saturated due to rising capacity demands. Therefore, exploring additional frequency bands is crucial.

Dr. Maida also referenced the recent World Radiocommunications Conference (WRC-23), which allocated the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi and IMT applications, following extensive studies and discussions that culminated in the conference held in Dubai, UAE. This allocation is expected to significantly enhance Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape and support the growing need for reliable and high-capacity internet connectivity.
